Particulates Matter

Latest from the Blog

This edition of the blog builds on a previous blog on wildfires. Some readers thought that I paid insufficient attention to lightning as a main cause. My research had shown that the primary causes were arson, campfires, power lines and equipment. But I decided to investigate the possibility that something had changed more recently.

I found a report suggesting that the California fires in August of this year were largely caused by lightning strikes. Investigating this hypothesis, I ultimately concluded that lightning as a major source was more of a chance event than a trend. The blog gets into detail on the reasoning behind this conclusion.
